Brian P. Sherin, FHFMA, is currently the President for the New Jersey Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). Brian has been a member of the Chapter since 1984 and has earned the distinction of Fellow within the organization.

Prior to his current position in the Chapter, Brian served on numerous committees in a variety of capacities including committee chair and co-chair roles. Brian co-chaired the 25th anniversary Annual Institute of the Chapter. In 2004 he received the Founders Medal of Honor Award from the national organization.

Brian has held positions in the provider setting including Assistant Administrator of Business Services and Chief Compliance Officer. He has experience in many administrative and operational aspects of hospital management, especially with regard to the revenue cycle.

In his consulting role, Brian has managed and participated in numerous client projects related to accounts receivable reduction, interim patient accounting management, compliance program development, reimbursement issues, revenue cycle analysis, physician coding and reimbursement and chargemaster/CPT coding reviews.

Brian holds a Master of Business Administration degree with a major in Finance from La Salle University and a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Business & Management from the University of Maryland. He plays an active role in both the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) and the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management, as well as other related organizations.

Mary T. Taylor, FHFMA is currently the President-Elect for the New Jersey Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), where she has been a member since 1996. She has achieved the distinction of Fellow within HFMA.

Prior to becoming a Board Member, Mary had co-chaired, then chaired the PFS Committee and the Corporate Compliance Committee. Mary has been on the Board of Directors since 2004, as Board liaison for the Education Committee, Compliance Committee, Patient Access and IT Committees. She has received the President’s Award in 2002 and won a Helen M. Yerger Award in 2003. Mary has also been recognized with the Follmer Bronze Award for her active role in HFMA.

Mary has twenty some years of experience in healthcare finance. She is currently the Director of Patient Finance and Managed Care for Southern Ocean County Hospital (SOCH).

Prior to SOCH, Mary was the Director of Business Operations for Salick Health Care, working with several regional centers in Philadelphia and New York. She also spent several years at a multi-hospital system in Philadelphia, Pa.

Mary earned a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Temple University and a Bachelor of Business degree from Temple University.

John M. Brault, CHFP

John M. Brault, CHFP, is currently the Secretary for the New Jersey Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA), where he has been a member since 2004. He has served on the chapter’s Board of Directors since 2006 when he was the first appointee to the Jr/Associate Board Member Position. He received the distinction of Certified Healthcare Financial Professional in 2007, specializing in Managed Care.

John was the founder and chair of the Future Leader committee, and served as co-chair of the 2009 Institute Committee, co-chair of the Events and Networking Committee, and an active member of the Education, Membership, and Proaction committees. In addition to his responsibilities as chapter secretary, John will also hold the responsibility of Program Chair, overseeing chapter-wide education programming for the ‘09-’10 chapter year. John won a Helen M. Yerger Award in 2007, and was recognized with the Follmer Bronze Award in 2008 for his activ e role in the chapter.

John holds the position of Network Manager at Aetna. In his current role, John is responsible for hospital, physician, ancillary contracting and network fortification for Aetna’s Metro New York market. Prior to his position at Aetna, John served as Director of Managed Care Services for Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, and as a consultant with McBee Associates.

John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Scranton, in Scranton, PA, and is currently enrolled in the Master of Health Administration program at Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ.

 Michael Alwell, FHFMA is currently the Treasurer of the New Jersey Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association where he has been a member since 1995, and has achieved the distinction of Fellow within HFMA.

 Prior to his election to the Board of Directors, Mike served on various committees within the organization, chairing the 2006 Annual Institute Committee and the 2007-2008 Certification Committee. Since joining the Board in 2008 Mike has served as co-chair of the Policies & Procedures Committee and as Board Liaison to the Certification Committee. In recognition of his service to HFMA, Mike received a Yerger Award and the President's Award in 2007 and the Muncie Gold Award in 2008.

Having held positions in budget & reimbursement, cost accounting, managed care contracting, general finance, and compliance, Mike has almost 25 years of experience in healthcare finance. Mike is currently the Corporate Director of Financial Compliance at Atlantic Health.

Mike earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Bachelor of Science degree from William Paterson College.

NJ HFMA Call for Presentations
The 2010 Annual Institute Committee is beginning the process of developing the program for the New Jersey and Metropolitan Philadelphia 2010 Annual Institute. The Institute will be taking place from October 20, 2010 through October 22, 2010 in Atlantic City, NJ, at the Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa. If you or your organization is interested in presenting at the 2010 Annual Institute, please complete the Abstract Request form and submit - in .doc form - with any supporting documentation to: institute.program@gmail.com

The deadline for submission is May 31, 2010. The 2010 Institute Committee will evaluate all submissions and submitters will be contacted with decisions by June 30, 2010. Any submission that is not selected for inclusion in the 2010 Annual Institute will be forwarded to the Education Committee and the appropriate topical forum for consideration at other chapter education sessions.
