Listen to Hackensack University Medical Center’s story and learn how they've installed Identity Management tools and re-engineered their patient access processes to decrease duplication, improve demographic quality in the MPI to support a healthy revenue cycle, improve billing, reduce denials, and improve patient and clinician satisfaction.

The Master Patient Index (MPI) serves as the foundation for all clinical and financial information related to patients and affects most areas of a healthcare organization. Accurate identification of patients in Patient Access areas is the first step in quality patient care and positive financial outcomes for the patient and the healthcare provider. Most U.S. hospitals average 8% - 12% duplication of patients in the MPI. Duplicate records and poor patient identification contribute to a number of negative financial outcomes for organizations, including; medical errors and the associated financial penalties, billing errors due to incomplete or incorrect demographic information, failure to comply with the CMS 72 hour rule, cost of repeat tests and treatment, and costs associated with cleaning up duplicates on the back-end. These costs can average between $100 and $400 per duplicate record. Failure to focus on MPI integrity also limits an organization’s ability to participate in Health Information Exchange activities.

Learning Objectives:

  • At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to describe the common causes of duplicate records
  • At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to describe how poor Identity Management affects all down-stream systems and processes connected the MPI.
  • At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to describe how poor Identity Management undermines the progress toward an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and an organization's ability to participate in Health Information Exchange with other providers
  • At the end of the presentation, participants should be able to describe how process changes and Identity Management tools can solve the Identity Management problem within their organization.

  • Laurie Napolitano, M.H.A., R.H.I.A.
